Last year's edition drew nearly 15,000 attendees the goal this year is 20,000. Wilhelm believes the high quality of this year's Cinetopia offerings is the result of the reputation Cinetopia is gaining with filmmakers, distributors and film lovers. The difference between going to a festival as compared to a regular film screening, Wilhelm says, is "the ability to talk to other viewers, to hear about what they have seen or are going to see." Collins points to similar events in Chicago and Cleveland that attract new films that have bowed at festivals in Toronto, Cannes, New York or Park City, Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival. Wilhelm and Michigan Theater executive director Russ Collins believe strongly that Detroit can support such an event. Cinema Detroit, in the old Burton International School, is a short walk down Cass Avenue. Wright Museum of African American History. The goal, according to DFT curator Elliot Wilhelm, is to create a "festival village atmosphere," especially in Detroit's Midtown area, which is home not only to the DIA but also screening spaces at Wayne State University, the College for Creative Studies and the Charles H. A symposium on film legend Orson Welles, who would have been 100 this year, bridges the two halves of the festival. Films will screen in Detroit from Friday through Sunday and then head to Ann Arbor next weekend. Special guests this year include local cinema experts, directors who will be appearing with their films and the well-known subjects of two new documentaries: Olympic diver Greg Louganis ("Back on Board: Greg Louganis") and 1950s movie heartthrob Tab Hunter ("Tab Hunter Confidential") will be interviewed live via Skype.Īt the 2014 festival, films played simultaneously in Detroit and Ann Arbor, but that's changing this year. The Maple Theater in Bloomfield Township is the only Detroit-area art-house venue that can show the digital 3D print of Jean-Luc Godard's "Goodbye to Language." The Redford Theatre in northwest Detroit has the capability to project "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Ghostbusters" in large-format 70mm film prints. Some of the locations have been added because of the technical extras they offer. An event that started in Ann Arbor in 2012 and spread to the DFT in 2013 is now taking place at 11 southeast Michigan venues. ![]() ![]() That event, cosponsored by the Arab American National Museum, is perhaps this year's best example of how Cinetopia is continuing to expand its reach. A live jazz performance of Gustav Holst's "The Planets" by the Mike Jellick Ensemble will be followed by a screening of "Khalil Gibran's the Prophet," a new animated adaptation of Lebanese writer-philosopher Gibran's beloved book of poetic essays. The festival, organized by the Detroit Film Theatre and the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, kicks off Friday night with a free event on the lawn of the Detroit Institute of Arts. "The best part, also the hardest part, is having the ability to see so many of these films, ones I have been reading about, in such a short period of time." "I had a great time last year, but this lineup looks even better," says McCoy, a 19-year-old film student who's home for the summer from Columbia College in Chicago. But for film devotees like Jack McCoy, decisions over which ones to see will be much more difficult. With more than 70 films playing over 10 days, the Cinetopia International Film Festival is offering roughly the same number of screenings as it did last year. ![]()
